Culture represents the wisdom of a nation. Extensive and profound, Chinese culture has a long history, the greatest charm of which lies in its inclusiveness and openness. As the host country of this year’s Australasia & East Asia Regional Conference, we will explore and discover the beauty of Chinese culture together with our partners from our region.
At 8:30 am on April 5th, the Australasia & East Asia Regional Conference was declared open with a song and dance of "Blue-and-White Porcelain" accompanied by guzheng, hulusi, piano and guitar. At the opening ceremony, Dr. Francis Pang, chairman of Shenzhen (Nanshan) Concord College of Sino-Canada delivered a speech. Dr. Pang expressed his welcome to all participants, and explained the significance and connotation lying behind the theme of the conference. Linda Li, director of university guidance office, shared her learning experience, having graduated from Beijing Concord College of Sino-Canada. She talked about the importance of continuous effort and persistence, sharing examples from her personal experience. Finally, Simona Baciu thanked our school for the invitation to the ceremony and wished us a successful Australasia & East Asia Regional Conference.
The opening ceremony ended with a traditional Chinese folk dance performed by the school dance team. Melodious ancient music, elegant national costumes, and graceful dancing won cheers and applause from the audience. After the opening ceremony, today's group activities began. All representatives were divided into five Baraza teams led by SCCSC student leaders to conduct various ice-breaking activities, through which the students from different countries quickly eliminated mutual estrangement, thus forging a friendly and earnest friendship.
There are eight major Chinese cuisines, among which Cantonese cuisine was a must-try for visitors coming to Shenzhen. For lunch, participants enjoyed classic Cantonese cuisine exquisitely prepared by our school canteen, while student leader Chen Shiming introduced the name, history, characteristics and cultural significance, helping our foreign friends obtain a better understanding of Chinese food culture.
After lunch, all the representatives came to the Arts and Sports Center to participate in an exploration of Chinese culture. There were five types of activities: learning calligraphy, painting Chinese opera makeup, doing Tai Chi, making a traditional headdress, designing and assembling lanterns, and Chinese paper cutting. Each activity was delivered under the guidance of a SCCSC teacher. Students learned Chinese martial arts with Ms. Ma Lirong, Chinese calligraphy with Ms. Li Yingde, paper-cutting with Ms. Liu Jing, ancient headdress and lantern-making with Ms. Yang Shuhui, and facial makeup with Ms. Yang Jialin. Everyone felt the essence of Chinese culture when participating in these activities.
The theme of today’s dinner was Chinese traditional festival—the Lantern Festival. At first, student leaders introduced the origin and cultural significance of Lantern Festival. Before dinner, a riddle-guessing contest was held which gave full play to the wisdom lying behind different nationalities and different countries. Then, all of our foreign friends learned to make tangyuan with the help of our restaurant chef. After the pleasant Lantern Festival themed dinner, a wonderful basketball match will be staged, making today’s conference even better.
